Interview with a Psychic: Shadow

Shadow work, fear, intuition, and making peace with the unseen.
We all have parts of ourselves we keep hidden: feelings we haven't fully processed, fears we don't want to confront, truths we'd rather leave buried. Sometimes, it's easier to stay in the light than venture into the darker corners of our own minds.
But what if the things we're afraid to face are the very things asking for our attention?
Shadow work invites us to look beneath the surface: to get curious about what we've been avoiding, and to recognize that darkness isn't always something to fear. Sometimes, it's simply something we haven't learned to understand yet.
For this installment of Interview with a Psychic, I sat down with Lex to talk about shadow work, the difference between fear and intuition, and what happens when we stop running from the parts of ourselves we've kept in the dark.

Taylor: What parts of ourselves tend to live in the shadow, and how can we recognize when something we’ve buried is asking to be seen?
Lex: (King of Cups) Our emotions can live mostly in the shadows. Similar to the moon, there is a dark side to us that no one sees. It could feel scary venturing into the darkness of emotions, but once we're there, it is less frightening than we let our imagination believe. If there is a shadow that is asking to be seen, it can show up in art, music, movies, or symbolisms and synchronicities that show up while doom scrolling. The emotions of the inner world will reveal themselves in the outer world.
Taylor: Fear and intuition can sometimes feel remarkably similar. How can someone tell when their inner voice is warning them versus when fear is simply trying to keep them comfortable?
Lex: (7 of Cups) Fear is confusing and filled with anxiety. Like a dark foggy cloud, fear will not allow you to see clearly. Fear is a survival mechanism, and it has kept humans alive for millions of years. Intuition is a similar mechanism, but is meant to be a gentle guide to your life. Intuition is a soft, unwavering knowing that what you are feeling and thinking is true. It is not rushed or anxious; it is a gut feeling that slightly winces when it hears the call. Fear will keep you stuck. Intuition will let you know when it's time to go.
Taylor: What can happen when we stop running from the darker or less comfortable parts of ourselves and actually begin to work with them?
Lex: (Queen of Pentacles) When we slow down and stop running from less comfortable parts of ourselves, we can become more present in the moment. Grounding practices like walking barefoot in nature, yogic breath work or learning how to embody relaxation helps us integrate what we have been not wanting to look at. Once we're able to sit with the uncomfortable parts, we can acknowledge them, but we must let them go. The light that is within expels the darkness.
