Pleasure, play, rest, and not earning happiness through exhaustion.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that joy comes after the work is finished. That rest has to be earned. That pleasure is a reward instead of a way of being.

But what if we've had it backwards all along?

Joy isn't something reserved for perfect circumstances. It's something we can cultivate, protect, and return to, even in the middle of ordinary life.

For this installment of Interview with a Psychic, I sat down with Lex to talk about rest, survival mode, and how to reconnect with the quiet joy that's been there all along.

Taylor: Why do so many people feel like they have to earn rest, pleasure, or happiness before they’re allowed to enjoy them?

Lex: When someone is stuck in survival mode, rest and pleasure can seem foreign. Their bodies are used to constantly moving and being on guard. If this is you, practice sitting and doing nothing (or meditation). It’s a form of self love and needs to be practiced daily. This is different from doom scrolling or taking a nap. It’s a conscious awareness of doing nothing. Maybe read a book or listen to some music, but the goal is to get comfortable relaxing without guilting or shaming yourself. You do not have to earn pleasure or happiness, but you do have to love and honor yourself. Pleasure and happiness is found within.

Taylor: How can someone reconnect with joy when life has felt heavy, stressful, or focused on survival for a long time?

Lex: Cut out the extra noise and distraction. Clutter or literal objects in your vicinity can make you feel heavy and stuck. It’s important to continually clear out your personal space and keep it open so your mind doesn’t get stuck on repeat. Let objects and items go! The internet can also be a form of heavy distraction. Like the clutter in your personal space, the internet can clutter and distract the mind.

Taylor: What’s the difference between temporary happiness and true joy, and how can we invite more of it into our everyday lives?

Lex: Happiness is found within. True joy is found within. There are things and people outside of you that can contribute to those things, but ultimately happiness and joy are an inside job. Never be mean or belittling to yourself (or others!). Only speak kind words over your life and learn to let go of negative mental chatter. You may need to unlearn certain story lines about yourself and rewrite a new one, but it will lead to long-term happiness. Balance is extremely important, but never deny yourself of anything you desire.
